  • Mad for mex

There's a reason Mexican and Tex-Mex cuisine tops many brunch lists: The filling food is protein- and carb-rich with a satisfying side of grease. This large breakfast doesn't disappoint, and with refried beans, avocados, tortillas, eggs and a spicy sauce, you'll be full until tomorrow.

A hangover is caused by dehydration of the brain created by the liver and kidneys "demanding" water out of the circulation to drive out the alcohol, which the body sees as a toxin (which technically it is). To counter this, then to avoid the hangover in the first place (prevention being better than cure) then before going to bed eat a slice of toast or bread, and about a pint of water. The water will supplement that already in the cirulation and stop the kidneys and liver using the reserves of water in tissue, particularly the brain which shrinks when giving up water (a biological warning), hence the headache the following morning. OK, drinking the water may want you to pee during the night, will make the body not draw on water reserves, held in the rest of the body. Also the soft nature of the bread or buiscuts will also absorb alcohol in the blood stream as well as giving up some of the water held in the bread (remember bread is about 50% water). Happy (headache free) Christmas. Patsy xx
