3 of the best...electric steam sterilisers

By Laura Mason

Every fortnight, journalist and mum Laura Mason will review three of the best baby products on the market for iVillage.co.uk. This week, she looks at electric steam sterilisers.

Tommee Tippee Closer to Nature Steam Steriliser

This steriliser was revamped in 2009 to improve some of the features of its predecessor which means that every function of the steriliser has been carefully thought out.  The main advantage of the Tommee Tippee steriliser is that it takes a quick five minutes to complete its sterilising cycle and the contents can stay sterilised for up to 24 hours.

The dome lid and inside racks ensure that up to six bottles, teats and accessories can be sterilised together.  The system is also suitable for other branded bottles, particularly wide neck bottles which can often be more difficult to clean.

RRP £46.99, available from Babies R Us

Medela B Well Steam Steriliser

This steam steriliser is one of the easiest to use. Simply add the water and with a single push of the button wait eight minutes until it completes the full cycle, courtesy of a visual and acoustic alert.  It isn’t the largest steriliser, which is good for taking up less surface space. However, this can make it slightly problematic if you want to sterilise a lot of bottles simultaneously.  It is best suited to Medela bottles and holds up to five, although you can use it with other branded bottles.

We also like this steriliser for being one of the most stylish available and the dismantling of it makes it very easy to clean.

RRP £59.99, available from Mothercare and Amazon.

Philips Avent 3 in 1 Electric Steam Steriliser

By far the most extravagant of sterilisers available for purchase, this system is extremely versatile and can be easily adjusted in size to perform three different functions. The small set-up is perfect for teats and dummies, the medium for cutlery and then the large size is for sterilising up to six bottles.

The cycle takes six minutes to complete and the system is suitable, and more importantly, steadily holds narrow and wide neck bottles of different brands so there are no restrictions on your preferred make or model.

Priced £60 from Boots.
