8 tool belt must-haves

If you're keen to get cracking on some household DIY you'll want to make sure you are properly equipped in tools and know-how. From changing a plug to laying a patio, these tool belt must-haves will help you nail it...

  • Claw hammer

A claw hammer is normally used for driving in nails with the ‘head’ of the hammer, and the curved ‘claw’ is used for removing nails. The most popular type of claw hammer is the two piece hammer. This has a forged steel head with a hole for fixing a handle. The handle is made from wood or even glass or carbon fibre. The other common type of claw hammer is single piece hammer made from forged heat-treated steel with the head and handle as one piece. These usually have a rubber or polymer handle for comfort and grip.

Check the hammer before use, making sure that the head is firmly attached to the handle and the handle has no splinters or defects. When using a claw hammer, hold the hammer at the base of the handle. This gives more leverage and helps keep the hammer at the right angle when nailing.
