A historic Olympic weekend of champions and idiots

By Sian Claire Owen on 06 Aug 2012 No comments

Last week I fell down an Olympic-shaped rabbit hole. I enjoyed it immensely, but nothing could have prepared me for the sheer drama, tension and joy of TeamGB’s success over the weekend. Super Saturday saw us win six gold medals in one day. I’ll repeat that. Six. Gold. Medals. TeamGB smashed it! Hopefully we can keep it up for the final week…

Why the Olympics are Great

TeamGB this year are just amazing. Jessica Ennis was a joy to watch – as was everyone else on the team. They were smiling, grinning and clearly enjoying being in the competition. Of course they took the competition seriously, but they they were having fun as well (unlike some other po-faced teams we won’t mention here).

Another fantastic thing about the Olympics is that you get the chance to enjoy other sports. Weightlifting, for example, is amazing. I love watching the strange looking competitors, with so much muscle their necks are wider than their heads. When they lifted the weights they were so phenomenally heavy that the steel bar literally bended. Wowzers.

In short, the London 2012 Olympics have shown me that sports other than football exist, and they are really, really good.

What sucks is…

Some idiot threw a bottle onto the track during the male 100m final. Apart from the fact it was very dangerous, it potentially ruined the biggest race of the games. Fortunately the culprit was floored by a Dutch Judo medalist, tackled by security and then arrested.

A brief sporting update

Jeez. Where to start? On Saturday Jessica Ennis won gold for the women’s heptathlon, Greg Rutherford scooped gold for his stellar long jump, and Mo Farah won a historic gold for winning the male 10,000 race – the first time a British competitor has won this for 100 years. And that was just track and field.

TeamGB also won two gold medals and a silver for rowing, and the women’s cycling team took gold in the velodrome.

Then… on Sunday Andy Murray won gold AND silver medals in tennis, sprinter Christine Ohuruogu won silver for the women’s 400m, gymnast (and all round cool dude) Louis Smith wins silver for men’s gymnastics whilst teammate Matt Wilcox takes bronze. Oh, and sailor Ben Ainslee won gold in the sailing final.

In short, TeamGB OWNED the Olympics this weekend!

Weird fringy stuff

Did you know that the Olympic gold medals are actually silver medals that have been gold plated? And unsurprisingly Olympic medals aren’t made for washing. brazilian Felipie Kitadi won bronze for Judo. He couldn’t bear to be parted from his medal and kept it on whilst in the shower. It broke. Fortunately he’ll be getting a replacement…

Top Tweets of the day

@J_Ennis I can't thank everyone enough for the support they have given me over the past few weeks! I'm blown away! Can't believe I'm Olympic Champion!

@Markfergusonuk Murray has won 8 games in a row against Federer. Am I still asleep? Was Super Saturday just a dream? IF SO DO NOT WAKE ME UP
