Amazing antioxidants
No comments
Antioxidants are substances in foods that protect the body's cells and DNA from damage caused by free radicals (by-products of use of oxygen in the body). Antioxidants have many health benefits and can reduce the risk of heart disease and some cancers.
Dark chocolate
Research has shown that dark chocolate contains antioxidants called catechins and phenols, which can help to prevent heart disease and cancer.
Red wine
Red wine contains resveratrol, which has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, but the beneficial properties of red wine are still controversial. Since the harmful effects of ethanol (alcohol) cannot be overlooked, it may be better to look for sources of resveratrol without ethanol - such as red grape juice.
Brazil nuts
Brazil nuts are a rich source of selenium, which is a key component of an important antioxidant enzyme in the body. Selenium is a vital trace element shown to be lacking in most diets due to poor quality soils.
Soy milk
Soy milk is rich in isoflavins, which have many health benefits including reduction of cholesterol, prevention of osteoporosis and reduction of risk for certain cancers (prostate and breast).
Oysters
Oysters are an excellent source of zinc, which is an antioxidant nutrient that is vital for immune function, digestion, energy metabolism and wound healing.
Tomatoes
Tomatoes contain high levels of a potent antioxidant known as lycopene, which is thought to protect against cancer cell replication.
Peppers
Peppers are high in vitamin C, which is known to reduce free radical damage to DNA cells.
Olive oil
Flavonoid polyphenols in olive oil are naturally occurring antioxidants, which have been shown to have many beneficial properties, including lowering cholesterol and blood pressure and reducing the risk of heart disease.
Barley
Barley is an excellent source of vitamin E, and high intake of vitamin E-rich foods appears to reduce the risk of cardio-vascular disease.
