Brighton, East Sussex
You'll find pebbles galore at Brighton beach, but the area is also buzzing with activities including volleyball, surfing, sailing and skateboarding.
Head to the pier if you like scary rides or stroll through the Laines for fun and funky shopping.

Southend-on-Sea, Essex
Roll up, roll up and discover the world's longest pleasure pier that stretches over a mile into the Thames Estuary. Although damaged by fire in 2005, the pier is being restored.
Expect plenty of novelty kiosks and fish and chips! Relax on the award-winning beaches or explore the largest town in Essex.

Broadstairs, Kent
Catch up on a bit of literary history with a visit to Broadstairs. Charles Dickens was a regular visitor and many buildings boast blue plaques.
Explore the narrow streets or hit the beach for sandcastles and donkey rides.

West Wittering, West Sussex
One of the premier Blue Flag beaches in the country, West Wittering is justly proud of its clean water and beautiful beaches.
Parking charges may seem steep, but it's a privately owned beach and once the car park is full, only pedestrian visitors are allowed, guaranteeing it will not become over-crowded.

Bournemouth, Dorset
With seven miles of sandy beaches, it's easy to see why Bournemouth remains popular. Stroll along the refurbished pier or browse the colourful market stalls.
Head for Durley Chine beach if you've got young kids and hire pedalos for some splashy fun.
Hastings, East Sussex
The well-kept Pelham Beach area is great for families, but be sure to head to the Old Town and explore the Stade.
The black wooden huts are unique to Hastings and are used to dry fishing nets. Hastings boasts the largest working beach-launched fishing fleet in Europe, so stock up on fresh fish, or indulge in some great fish and chips.
Eastbourne, East Sussex
With four miles of beach, Eastbourne has plenty to offer the sun-seeker.
Rent a beach hut, hire a deckchair or take advantage of the town's beautiful gardens and mini golf course, and you'll enjoy a day of traditional seaside fun.
Whitstable, Kent
If you're a foodie, head to the calm waters of Whitstable and wander down among the beach huts and pebbles to work up an appetite.
Whitstable oysters are renowned for their quality and have been collected here since Roman times. Enjoy these and other fishy delicacies at many of the local restaurants.
