These days you need a keen eye to spot a fake. Read our top tips to avoid being duped.
While it may seem like a bit of fun to snap up fake designer goods on the cheap – it's worth remembering Courtney Love's experience. Publicly shamed in the tabloids for turning up to Paris Hilton's birthday party in a rip-off dress, the repentant rock star went on to say, 'I'd rather go naked than wear fake Chanel!'
On a more serious note, it's worth remembering that money spent on counterfeit goods actually funds an illegal multi-billion pound industry, where clothes and accessories are likely to be manufactured in sweatshops.
'Don't buy a lie,' says musician-come-fashion designer P Diddy, 'When you purchase a fake, you become part of the counterfeiting cycle; your money directly supports these things.'
But, it is increasingly difficult to tell the difference between the real deal and a forgery. Computer technology has made copying branded goods so much easier. Counterfeiters buy designer merchandise, take it apart at the seams, scan it into a computer and email the details to factories to reproduce. Logos can be re-created in an instant, copies go on sale in a matter of weeks. So, how to spot a fake?
1. Use authorised retailers
This may sound obvious, but if you're buying a Chanel 2.55 handbag on Canal Street, New York or down some backstreet in Hong Kong then it's highly unlikely that it's the genuine article.
The same goes for purchasing a bottle of Marc Jacob's Daisy eau de toilette from a man with a suitcase on Oxford Street. Those hysterical shoppers are all part of the scam, and with the unknown ingredients, it won't just be your fingers getting burned. Don't do it. Purchase items from the brand's flagship shop, a reputable department store or website, like net-a-porter.
2. How much?
Do your research. Have a good idea how much that Cartier watch/Stam bag is going to cost before you splurge. Check the recommended retail price on the company website, or in a reliable fashion magazine. If the merchandise on offer is massively discounted, there's a good chance we're talking knock-off. Remember, you get what you pay for. There's a reason why that Louis Vuitton bag is so cheap.
3. Pay attention to detail
Be a savvy shopper. Know what colour the lining of that latest 'it' bag is supposed to be. Make sure the hardware – zips, buckles, rivets – has the signature logo or brand name. Designer sunglasses should have a peel-off UV certificate, if not, they're probably a bit shady, and won't provide proper protection.
Cartier watches always have the word 'Cartier' etched somewhere on the dial, often on the 'V' of the Roman numeral 'VII'. It pays to be vigilant. There are some very good fakes out there, but they may not be exact replicas.
