Party hairstyling tips

With the party season approaching, make sure your hair doesn't let you down with these simple tips for perfect party hair from leading stylist, Sally Brooks

The Christmas Ball

Up-dos and beautifully groomed hair were key trends at the autumn and winter shows this year so for the glamorous Christmas party, take inspiration from the catwalk and opt for sleek, elegant and ultra-feminine up-dos. Think chic chignons, beautiful ballerina buns and up-loop ponytails for hair that complements elegant evening wear.

Chic chignons

Pull hair into a low ponytail and secure with a hair band. Slick the ponytail with a shine serum to make hair more manageable, and to achieve an all-over gloss shine. Twist the ponytail around and pull it up to make a large loop; simple, stylish and sophisticated.

Up-loops

This style will bring out the glamour puss in you! Pull hair into a ponytail, ensuring that the front of the hair is swept back and super sleek. Pull a big loop of hair halfway back through the hair band and shape evenly for an elegant bun effect, with strands of hair hanging underneath.

The office party

This is the perfect opportunity to jazz up your look and re-invent your style for one night only. If you are going to the party straight from work and do not have time to spend hours transforming your hair, braiding and ponytails are the easiest techniques to achieve fabulous work-to-play hair. To transform a classic bob into textured tresses, braid small sections of damp hair in the morning all over the head. Clamp the braids with straightening irons to set. Before the party, unpick the braids to reveal sexy, loose waves for a funky yet sophisticated look. Use a light finishing spray for hold.

Ponytail power

Easy, timeless and simple to achieve, the classic ponytail can work wonders on long hair.

Sally says: 'The great thing about ponytails is that they suit most people, whatever their age, and they're fabulous for turning a bad hair day on its head ready for the party! Simply run some styling tonic through limp locks, brush through and secure at the nape of the neck with a diamante hair band. You'll look instantly stylish and nobody will know it's a greasy hair cover-up!'

For an edgier look add a fashionable quiff to the front of the hair.

Short hair

Doll-up short hair for a glam night out with sparkly clips, glitter or a tiara hair band.

Top tip

Over the festive period, keep a small supply of kirby grips and a good styling spray in your top drawer at work. You never know what improptu party you might be invited to. Bumble and Bumble hair powder is also a great product to use if you are short on time and want to eliminate greasy hair the morning after.

Top party tip

If your hair turns limp from dancing the night away, head straight to the ladies for the hand dryer. A quick blast at the roots will help to pump up the volume in no time! Give your style staying power with a spritz of hairspray to hold in place. Keep bobby pins and hairspray in your bag for emergencies.
