Putting on the spritz

by Michelle Braham

Coco Eau de Parfum by Chanel, £34 for 50ml Gabrielle 'Coco' Chanel burst onto the scene in the 1920s to give the world classic couture, the little black dress and the stunning best-selling perfume that bears her name. Favoured by actresses Catherine Zeta Jones and Gwyneth Paltrow, this mature and seductive scent is sex in a bottle. I loved the aroma; a combo of floral and oriental with a complex concoction of French angelica, peach, orange blossom, coriander, Bulgar Spice Island, clove bud, Indian Jasmine, amber, leather, Caribbean cascarida, frangipani and mimosa. Although not dour, it's a full, glamorous scent and far more suitable for evenings. The charming bottle is prestigious and elegant; the refined aroma oozes confidence and class. Just a tiny dab complemented by my finest clobber and highest heels and I felt like a chic Parisian aristocrat.

Paul Smith Woman by Paul Smith, £30 for 50ml/ #42 for 100ml This cool London-based designer reckons 'a perfume should always whisper, never shout', so it's a good job his signature fragrance exudes sheer understated decadence. This vivid scent totally reflects the true image of Paul Smith's fashion - elegant, bold and eccentric. The top notes combine bergamot and clementine with cassis; its heart notes comprise a subtle blend of freesia, geranium, peony and osmanthus. The end result is a magnificent floral fragrance with vivid woody notes. I loved the bottle - one side is tinted pink, which refracts the colour through the clear glass. Stepping into the midst of this feminine fragrance made me feel delightfully sensual.
