Caring for sensitive skin
Clothes that are clean and kind to skin is what we want for sensitive skin, and Persil Non-Bio is the country's most popular non-bio detergent
Our skin is the barrier between ourselves and the outside world; and it does a wonderful job. However, a baby's skin is sensitive. This is because with a new born baby the top layer of their skin is thinner and less oily than an adult's.
There are, however, occasions when the protection we get from our skin can become compromised. This may be due to such things as dry, cracked skin; sensitive skin; or pre-existing conditions such as eczema.
Persil Non-Bio will clean and care for your family's clothes brilliantly, leaving them kind next to sensitive skin. Persil's research into skin care is supported by the British Skin Foundation.
Skin care research
Persil Non-Bio has been thoroughly researched to ensure that it is kind to sensitive skin. Dermatological tests were used to optimize kindness to skin whilst maintaining a high standard of cleaning.
Having reviewed Persil Non-Bio's research, a dermatology nurse specialist noted that, 'The application of the results of these tests has produced improved detergents that are mild to skin, like Persil Non-Bio.'
Persil Non-Bio has its own expert scientists who specialise in skin care, but to help to better understand the needs of those with sensitive skin, Persil Non-Bio works with:
- healthcare professionals (Dermatologists, Dermatology Nurses, Health Visitors, Midwives, a GP and a Pharmacist
- the British Skin Foundation
- the National Eczema Society
- the National Childbirth Trust
A perspective from the British Skin Foundation
'The next time you're in a supermarket and you see a product with our logo on it, it means that the British Skin Foundation has independently approved the research that has gone into it.'
...and from the National Childbirth Trust
'The National Childbirth Trust has worked with Persil Non-Bio for almost 10 years. Their support has helped our charity to provide more services to parents and parents-to-be throughout the UK. This has included the setting up of our enquiry and breastfeeding helplines, which support over 100,000 parents and parents-to-be each year. Persil Non-Bio also supports the NCT at a local level, providing our 320 branches with practical materials for the Nearly New Sales fundraising events,' says Diane Emery, Head of the NCT's fundraising.
Eczema
Eczema is an increasing problem in the UK. Currently, about 1 in 5 school children have eczema. With eczema there is a reduction in the natural oils produced by the skin with the skin losing water and becoming dry, hot and itchy (this may be an inherited tendency or a response to something irritating the skin), and this usually leads to a rash. In babies, eczema usually starts between two and six months of age; the face is commonly affected and then moves to the front of the knees as they start to crawl.
Eczema varies in severity, but the main problem is usually the itch and this can lead to sleep problems with children.
Management of eczema is based around replacing the body's natural oils with moisturisers (emollients), avoiding soaps, and using a steroid cream to settle any irritation. Using a non-bio detergent, such as Persil Non-Bio, may also help.
What do health visitors say?
A survey of health visitors, conducted by Persil Non-Bio, revealed that newborns are the group most likely to suffer from skin irritation. All the health visitors (175 surveyed) would recommend a Non-Bio for someone concerned about their own or their family's skin; and that a laundry detergent that is milder to skin would be beneficial. When asked why, replies included:
- it has made a major difference
- it's less likely to irritate sensitive skin
- it's gentle and protective
- it reduces itching and discomfort
