Why exercising your eyes is important

If you play sports or have an active lifestyle, perfect vision can give you an edge over the competition

We understand this at Johnson & Johnson Vision Care totally. We know the importance of eye health and its potential - that's why we're working with Britain's top athletes, to boost their chances of bringing home gold from the Beijing Games.

But you don't have to be an elite athlete, good eyesight can enhance your everyday performance and quality of life and an exercise regime can help develop better eyesight.

Put eye training in your sights

To improve your eyesight for sport, try these simple exercises - and even if your eyes are fine, training will keep them in top condition and help to give you a competitive edge. Remember to wear your glasses or contact lenses as you normally would. These exercises take just ten minutes, three days a week. It really is that simple.

Mirror Rotation

Stand in front of the mirror and, while looking into your own eyes, move your head from side-to-side as well as up and down. Mirror rotations such as this will also help you keep an eye on a moving target.

There are two types of movement your eyes make: pursuit and saccadic. Pursuit movements help the eyes follow a target as it moves whereas Saccadic movement is when your eye jumps to where it expects a target to be.

Follow the Torch

  • Standing in a semi-dark room shine a torch on the wall at varying speeds and follow the beam as accurately as possible.
  • Turn the torch on and off rapidly as you move it. Try to 'catch' the beam of light as it jumps across the wall.

And, while we'd all like eyes in the back of our heads, it's never going to happen naturally. But this exercise for your peripheral vision is the next best thing:

Peripheral Awareness

  • Concentrate on a fixed point and attempt to describe the environment and people around you in detail. Start with static items and move on to moving targets the better you get.

Johnson & Johnson is the Official Vision Care Product Partner of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games and is taking this opportunity to use respected sporting heroes as ambassadors to raise eye health awareness amongst the public.
