Do you examine your sight as much as you do your bank balance? Probably not...
Research suggests that you're not alone - surprisingly, most people don't have their eyesight checked regularly. They mistakenly believe it's only necessarily to have them tested if something is wrong. That's a short-sighted view, according to Johnson & Johnson Vision Care.
You only have one pair of eyes so looking after them should be a priority. They should be checked by an optician at least every other year, even if you have perfect 20/20 vision.
If you have suffered with blurred vision or headaches, it's even more important to have an eye examination. They'll look at your eyes and see if they could benefit from some simple exercises or if your sight needs correcting.
They can also uncover underlying health conditions such as glaucoma, high blood pressure and diabetes. An examination costs around £25, but if you're under 16 or over 60, at risk from diabetes or glaucoma or on a low income, it's free under the NHS.
Check out your optician
So what exactly will the tests include? Here's a list of some of the usual tests an optician may undertake to determine how well your eyes are performing:
- Reading a variety of letters of different sizes, with or without corrective lenses
- Shine a light into your eyes to check for healthy blood supply and a healthy retina (the back of the eye)
- Use a machine to test your field of vision - how well you can see at the edges of your vision
- Puff a tiny amount of air onto the eye's surface to check for glaucoma. It comes as a slight surprise but it's not uncomfortable
- A check on your colour vision
- Take a digital photograph of the eye to compare with images taken at a later date.
If the outcome of the eye examination means you need to wear corrective lenses, you may be able to use contact lenses.
There are a number of advantages to wearing contact lenses over glasses such as a wide, natural field of vision, not steaming or smearing, comfort and for some wearers, can improve eyesight beyond 20/20 vision, so do consult your optician if you need vision correction.
