What can I do about dark under-eye circles?

question
I have very dark circles under my eyes. In my vain attempt to get rid of them, however, I’ve tried several eye creams and concealers with no luck. I’ve even considered laser surgery, but was advised against it due to my Asian complexion. Can you help?

answer
This is quite a common beauty complaint. The area beneath the eye has no real underlying layer of fat (it is present in all other areas of the face), and as a consequence, it’s somewhat transparent and blood vessels are more visible. Without this subcutaneous fat layer there’s also a greater chance that any collected fluids will be much more obvious in this area; it might look like you have ‘bags’ under your eyes after crying a lot or after a series of late nights. Medications or creams are very unlikely to make any appreciable difference (except the application of make-up, of course). Don’t waste your money on products that don’t deliver – staying fit and healthy is the solution to keeping those dark circles at bay. Laser surgical techniques will not correct this unless you have abnormal blood vessels in your face. Good luck.
