Finding a dermatologist

question
I'd like to see a dermatologist, but how do I go about finding one?

answer

Finding the right dermatologist is important and will require a referral from your GP. A dermatologist is a medically qualified doctor who's completed two to three years of study in general medicine to get a higher degree and become a member of the Royal College of Physicians (MRCP). After this, doctors can then apply for one of 150 specialist registrar training posts in the UK, and then train for four more years to become an accredited dermatologist. At this time they can apply for one of the 450 UK consultant hospital posts as a consultant dermatologist.

The majority of dermatologists work within local NHS hospitals. However, around two-thirds devote a small part of their time to private practice, either within the NHS base hospital outside usual NHS clinics or in a local private hospital or clinic. For benign or 'cosmetic' problems, the waiting list to see a dermatologist with an NHS appointment can be long, and you may wish to seek advice privately. If you have private insurance you'll need to make sure your provider covers visits to a dermatologist. Again, a referral letter from your GP is required, and he or she will be able to refer you to a dermatologist that specialises in your particular condition.

If you have a compelling reason to see a dermatologist without first seeing your GP (i.e. you have an emergency or your GP is unavailable), telephone a local private hospital and ask who is available for private dermatology consultations. If a dermatologist agrees to see you, he or she will communicate to your GP the details of the consultation and any recommended treatment.

Most UK registered dermatologists are also members of the British Association of Dermatology (BAD). You can contact them by e-mail at admin@bad.org.uk
