Your skin and the environment

Ever wondered what kind of havoc the elements are wreaking on your skin? Read on to discover the biggest natural culprits

The sun
The rays of the sun have more potential to change the look of your skin than any other environmental factor. A sunburn, or even a tan, indicates that your skin has been damaged, which in turn causes your skin to age prematurely. How does this happen? Ultraviolet light from the sun breaks down collagen and elastin, the building blocks of your skin, which causes wrinkling and sagging. The sun's rays also make skin rough and can overstimulate pigment cells, causing brown spots. To protect your skin, dermatologists recommend the daily use of a sunscreen or foundation with an SPF 15.

The seasons
Your skin is naturally pliable and soft, and it tends to look its best in humid climates. This is because skin actually draws moisture into its top layers from the air. Meanwhile, dry air will sap moisture from the skin, leaving it flaky, tight and rough. Eventually your skin adjusts - even if you were to move from the tropics to a chilly climate, your skin wouldn't stay dry forever. In the meantime, a good moisturiser will help ease symptoms of dry skin. Also, drinking lots of water can keep your skin hydrated and looking radiant.

Air pollution
Pollution is problematic for your skin for several reasons. Dust can clog pores and increase bacteria on the face, both of which lead to acne or spots. Invisible chemical pollutants in the air can interfere with your skin's natural protection system, breaking down the natural skin's oils that normally trap moisture into your skin and keep it supple. Studies show that pollution can actually cause reactions in the skin that inhibit the way it builds and repairs itself. Remember to thoroughly cleanse your skin each evening to wash away dirt and grime.
