Spa pleasures: Chardonnay Organic Wrap

SANCUTARY Experience the joys of a flotation bath without getting wet at London's Covent Garden Sanctuary Spa. Vivien Watson reveals all

Treatment: Chardonnay Organic Wrap
Duration: 55 minutes
Cost: £59.00

"A Chardonnay Organic Wrap?" scoffed my husband when I told him about the treatment I was planning to have during my trip to The Sanctuary. "You'd be better off drinking it than rubbing it all over your body!"

Hmmm, he had a point but I was keeping an open mind. It's true to say that the Chardonnay Wrap came as a whole new experience to me. For a start the treatment table was wider than any I'd seen before and the room contained a shower unit. I was intrigued.

Before the treatment, I changed into the obligatory paper knickers and was asked to shower lightly so that my skin was wet all over.

On the table I was covered with an exfoliating powder mixture of the grape husk, seeds, stalk and grape juice which is meant to be good for lightening of pigmentation and age spots.

I was then wrapped in lovely warm towels and a double skinned plastic blanket that was filled with warm water.

Feeling weightless
The central base of the table was lowered so that I was left feeling as though I was suspended in the blanket. This is what's known as 'dry floatation'.

The experience was wonderful; as there was no pressure on any part of my body the result was one of complete relaxation and weightlessness. I was told that the 20 minutes I lay there was equivalent to two-and-a-half hours sleep and it certainly felt like it.

A few minutes into the floatation the therapist who had left me to relax alone returned to check I was OK. Apparently some people don't like the sensation and feel a bit claustrophobic. Not me, I just closed my eyes and drifted off.

Once the floatation was over I rinsed off the grape mixture in the shower and then hopped back onto the table for an all-over moisturising treatment of goats' butter. I thought I might smell a bit strange afterwards but it quickly soaked into my skin leaving it feeling soft and me feeling wonderfully relaxed.

What could better that? Just a great lunch and a glass of Chardonnay.
