Elemis body sculpting cellulite and colon therapy
A new detoxifying treatment from Elemis promises to inhibit fat storage, aid and cleanse the digestive system and assist in the break down of fatty deposits. Beauty editor Ronita Dutta gave it a try
Duration: 1 hour
Cost: £90
What is it supposed to do? Cleanse the digestive system, inhibit fat storage, eliminate toxins, improve skin tone and texture, increase blood and lymphatic circulation, assist in the breakdown of fatty deposits, smooth tone and redefine contours.
What does the treatment involve?
- The body is brushed using the Elemis natural cactus skin brush to stimulate circulation and bring oxygen to the surface. Increasing circulation helps the blood move throughout the body more efficiently, clearing any build-up of waste and toxins under the skin.
Reiki Chakra breathing helps cleanse and disperse waste. Using Body Sculpting Lipo-Refining Serum with a specialised massage sequence over legs, hips and thigh and extra pressure on problem sections, the lymphatic nodes are kneaded to help stimulate blood flow and drain away excess fluid. Vigorous pounding on the fleshy parts of the thigh encourage fat cells to break down and increase blood flow.- A detoxifying fennel and birch peel-off body mask is then applied to the legs and top of the thighs, drawing out any impurities to help firm and smooth the skin. Fennel is valued for its diuretic properties, whilst birch works to stimulate blood flow.
Cleansing of the colon through abdominal massage and reflexology helps to detoxify the body. Working with the clients' breathing pattern, the therapist massages around the stomach, starting at the base of the ascending colon and moving round clockwise, following the line of digestion. Pressure is only applied on the exhaled breath, making it more comfortable for the client.- Performing a scalp massage relaxes and de-stresses the body to release toxins more effectively. The body mask is removed and the hips and thighs are wiped clean using Hot Lime Mitts before Body Sculpting Firming Cream is applied using a sweeping massage technique to the entire legs to encourage lymphatic decongestion.
What's it like?
The cactus body brushing was firmer and more bracing than I imagined and the massage was quite intense and vigorous. It didn't hurt, but it's certainly not the kind of treatment where you can drift off to sleep. It feels as though everything in your body is getting a bit of a wake-up call and that those toxins lurking in the system are being told in no uncertain terms where to go.
Having my abdominals massaged was a new and slightly peculiar experience too. Sam, my therapist asked me to breathe in deeply through the nose while imagining something really heaving was pushing down on my stomach. As I exhaled slowly through the mouth, she gently massaged key areas of the stomach causing it to gurgle and pop. It is slightly unnerving at first but feels okay once you're used to it.
The results
There's no denying my legs and bum look and feel smoother after just one treatment. I made sure I drank plenty of water afterwards, as advised, to flush out those nasty toxins. Elemis recommend having the treatment twice a week for four weeks and then once a month for maintenance. They also recommend daily body brushing and use of their Body Sculpting System at home between treatments.
Would I recommend it?
Yes. It is a great treatment for anybody wanting to give their digestive system a kick-start as well as launch an assault on 'orange peel' skin.
Where can I have it done?
Elemis Day Spa, Mayfair and salons and spas nationwide. Visit www.elemis.com for more details.
