Can I have an elective caesarian?

Question:

Hi, I read that some hospitals are banning elective caesarians because of the cost. Does this mean a patient can still have one if they are willing to pay the extra cost (which the newspaper said was about £800)? Under what circumstances would a mother-to-be still be allowed one?

Answer:

A Caesarean will always be offered if medically advisable. In the case of parents simply making the choice to opt for one in the
absence of medical evidence to support a need, your doctors will discuss this with you and this is where different hospitals have different policies.  As for the cost of a private Caesarean, it will vary from hospital to hospital, and many NHS hospitals do not offer them privately, but is typically several thousand pounds.
