Cancelling Bank Holidays: a necessary evil?
New government proposals have been announced which would see Bank Holidays scrapped - maybe as early as this year - due to the credit crunch
The forthcoming Easter weekend will be a public holiday as usual but it is thought a legally binding ruling is imminent, declaring May Day (May 4) and Spring Bank Holiday (May 25) as regular working days.
The move comes after The Confederation of British Industry (CBI) revealed that Bank Holidays cost the UK economy upwards of £2 billion every year.
Unions are thought to be outraged by the decision but Chancellor Alistair Darling insisted the action was 'the right course to take in exceptionally difficult times'.
Do you think cancelling Bank Holidays is a sensible way of tackling the financial crisis? Will you be forced to change your plans as a result?
