Capturing the elusive female orgasm

By Sian Claire Owen on 15 Nov 2011 1 comment

Orgasms, eh! Some women have ‘em, some have about 18 different types, and others have none at all. Some believe them to be mythical, others believe they’re as common as sneezing. Some people probably mix them up with sneezing.

Ladies from my grandmother’s generation just didn’t have them (or didn’t admit it), but young women today want their kicks on demand – we can probably blame our hyper-sexualised culture, I mean look at Rihanna’s crotch grabbing habit, she must be perpetually on heat.

Men often have trouble creating them, and scientists generally believe that although female orgasms are awesome, they’re not really necessary. Charming.

But researchers have now created brain scan images of the female brain getting it’s rocks off, in the hope that they can capture the elusive orgasm on screen and help people who can’t help themselves.

Unfortunately we couldn’t embed the video but take a look – it’s almost as if there’s a disco going on in there, which isn’t entirely surprising. What is surprising is how they got the images – they had a woman lie in an MRI scanner, in a laboratory, whilst she stimulated herself. I bet that made for some awkward moments afterwards.

What was interesting was that over 80 different areas of the brain were switched on, starting with the areas associated with touch, right through to the emotional centres and long-term memory. During climax, areas of the brain responsible for muscle tension, reward and pleasure go into overdrive and the woman’s brain is flashing brighter than a strobe light at a rave. Us women are fabulously complicated creatures!

I’d like to see a scan of the male brain during orgasm. I’m willing to bet that whereas the women’s brain is a wondrous symphony of biological synchronisation, the male orgasm is quick and football-shaped. But it’s not a competition, it’s all good fun!

And if you have trouble finding your G-Spot, it just so happens that iVillage UK has a handy Orgasmatron. Maybe the researchers should have checked this out too!
