Catwalk-inspired make-up trends
We showcase five hot make-up trends from the Spring/Summer 2010 catwalks and explain how to recreate them at home for an edgy new look
By Ronita DuttaTrend 1: Athletic glow
The emphasis here is looking natural with a radiant athletic twist. Skin looks healthy and outdoorsy. Give your complexion a healthy zing using a lightweight and sheer mineral highlighter which gently highlights and sculpts the face, neck and decolletage such as No7 Limited Edition Natural Radiance Highlighter, (£13.50, Boots).
Expert tip: 'A dusting onto the highest point of the cheekbones will add freshness to the skin and also help to contour and lift the face.' No 7 Make-up artist Lisa Eldridge
Alternatively, warm up your complexion using a light dusting of bronzer such as Avon's Arabian Glow Bronzing Pearls (£5).
Expert tip: 'Focus the colour on all the areas of the face that reflect the light; chin, forehead, length of the nose and apples of the cheeks. The colour should blend with your skin and look virtually undetectable.' Celebrity make-up artist Jackie Tyson.
For lips try Mac's Lipglass in Almondine - a pale gold with pearl by day and Gold Dust - a deeper coppery tone - by night (£12 www.maccosmetics.co.uk).

Trend 2: Soldier Girl
This is one look that translates seamlessly from runway to everyday. Opt for a functional military pallet of khaki, mushroom and chocolate brown.
Brows are thick but neat. Blot an old brown mascara wand on tissue paper and comb it along your brows in the direction of hair growth to thicken and tidy your natural brow line.
To achieve that airbrushed look try Revlon's new Photo Ready foundation (£12.99) containing photochromatic pigments to bend, reflect and diffuse light for a more flattering finish.
Expert tip: 'Pump a small amount onto the back of your hand, dip your brush in it, stroke on hand to melt slightly, and then begin applying on skin. Start under the eyes and work out to cheeks, etc. Then spot check with concealer using a brush to soften and blend.' Revlon Global Artistic Director, Gucci Westman
Eye make-up here is minimal with just a slick of dark brown mascara we like Barbara Daly's All About Face mascara in brown (£1.49 Tesco).
Add a touch of rich brown eye pencil and blend using taupe and natural brown shadow around the eyelids and socket. Nvey's Eco Eye Palette Natural pictured (£31.50 from www.EthicalSuperstore.com) contains all the right shades.

Trend 3: Acid Brights
As wardrobes get a tribal makeover this season, so does the face and those who are brave (and young) enough are heartily encouraged to experiment with dramatic face paint.
Models on Balenciaga's Spring/Summer 2010 catwalk sported fierce feline-esque make-up that can easily be adapted for a less dramatic wearable day look by not extending the winged liner/shadow combo so far.
Opt for a dark grey eye shadow rather than black such Clinique's Colour Surge Eyeshadow Stay Matte in Slate (£13) or for a more intense colour try Sleek Dirty Eye Dust (£2 at Superdrug). Use a little shadow to brush along the lashline and extend upwards at a 45 degree angle from the outer corner.
Try a bright orange on the eye's inner corner. We like RMK's Spring Modern Eyes Ltd Edition 03 in Orangy Brown (£25).
With such bold eyes, it's best to keep lips muted. Go for a moisturising nude like this one from George at Asda (£3).
Finish with a slick of neon nail varnish in Mint from the Essential colours range at M&S on short square nails that are bang on trend. (£2.50/8ml).

Trend 4: Violet femme
Purple and mauve are the make-up colours of choice for the seriously fashion forward this season.
Achieve inky purple lips using Givenchy's Printed Lips in Rose Impression (£16). It's just like a felt-tip pen for the lips so being precise is a cinch. For a more vibrant and rich colour layer with Mac's Hang-up lipstick in Deep Berry (£12.50 www.maccosmetics.co.uk).
If a full mauve lip is a bit too daring for you, try experimenting with purple around the eyes. Givenchy's mauve Phenomen' Eyes Effet Mascara (£19) in elegant violet will give peepers a jazzy lift.
Or choose an eye shadow palette containing a deep purple and complementing shades such as Dior's 5 couleurs Iridescent in Pearl Glow (£39 Dior.com).
Expert tip: 'It is important to complement your outfit with makeup rather than coordinate. Colour blocking is big for his season so when you wear bright colours don't try to match the exact same colour on your eyelids, go for another statement bold colour and use it sparingly.' Celebrity make-up artist Jackie Tyson.

Trend 5: Perfect pastels
For those with paler skins the latest trend for pretty pastel shades to complement summer's floral influenced fashions could be just the look for you.
Use an illuminating powder to give your complexion a radiant healthy glow without dewiness. We adore Dior Poudrier Dentelle (£39) which gives skin a subtle rosy glow.
Keep lips moist and supple with just the tiniest hit of colour using a subtle lip balm like Pop's new petal jam (£9 www.popbeauty.co.uk).
Load up on fake lashes for a more intense evening look. Blink+Go false lashes can be applied at home or by a skilled technician who will tailor the lashes to suit your eye shape. (From £8.95. Call 0845 644 3994 (ext 32) for more information).
Paint nails in pretty ice-cream pastels using Orly's Sweet Collection (£8.95 www.cupidandgrace.com). Our fave is Snowcone blue (pictured).
