Pregnancy can be a strange and unusual time for first time mothers and even seasoned pro's can find it difficult to remain calm, happy and perhaps most importantly, comfortable as your bump grows. There are lots of easy and helpful little things you can do yourself to maintain your happiness and well-being throughout pregnancy.
Rest
It may be obvious but remember to put your feet up at every opportunity. Sit in a comfy chair with your legs propped up on cushions or a footstool whenever you can to help with swollen or achy ankles. Even if you lead a busy lifestyle and you're an active person, keep reminding yourself that you can't and don't have to do as much as you normally would when you're pregnant.
Music
Try loading an album of calming relaxation music on to your iPod to stay calm during a train commute or pop a CD in the car. If whale songs aren't your thing then get your partner or a friend to make a compilation of your shared favourite tracks, then sit back and enjoy.
Touch
Massage is great for relieving sore muscles and tension, but did you know that belly stroking is also extremely calming for you and the baby? Either try it yourself or get your partner to join in for an extra daddy bonding experience. There are specialist masseuses trained in pregnancy massage and make sure you use special oils on the market suitable for use during pregnancy.
Exercise
Water is a natural healer so swimming is a great way to keep fit and relax during pregnancy, as the water supports your weight. Even a soak in the bath will help tired muscles and help to calm you. Prenatal yoga is widely available nowadays too, and whilst it's designed to help you tone up gently, often relaxation techniques are included in the classes. Why not also try going out for a walk? The sun will boost serotonin levels, the body's natural feel-good chemicals, and will pick you up if you've been cooped up in doors all day. Venture to the park, for a wander round the shops or a walk around the block in the later stages of pregnancy if that's all you can manage.
Clothes
Don't be tempted to squeeze yourself into too tight clothes; a of pair of maternity jeans will be sufficient and thereare lots of fashionable, comfortable and importantly affordable maternity wear available on the high street and internet. Wearing soft natural fabrics like cotton, cashmere and soft wool will keep you cool when necessary and comfy and snug when you need to be too. Wrap yourself up and wash your clothes in Comfort Pure to keep fibres smoother so your clothes feel extra soft and gentle against the skin. It's not only Dermatologically tested and hypoallergenic but it's research into skin is validated by the British Skin Foundation. A lovely soft pashmina is a great investment as it can be worn over the shoulders or as a scarf when it's chilly.
Reflexology
Reflexology is a natural therapy that believes your feet are in a sense a 'map of your body.' A reflexologist will clear blockages and ease ailments by putting a small amount of pressure on your feet - it's a bit like a foot massage. It can be very relaxing, can relieve tension and help any pregnancy ailments you're suffering from.
Laughter Don't forget the benefit of good, old fashioned laughter! Stick on your favourite comedy DVD or go to a comedy night with your partner or friends. Your baby will also feel the effect of all that giggling too!
