What is the Montignac diet and does it work?

question
A friend of mine has been food combining (following the Montignac diet) and has lost quite a bit of weight. I wondered if you think this is a good way to lose weight and keep it off long-term compared to other diets? How does it actually work and do you think its okay to follow this diet for life?

answer
Food combining has been a popular way of controlling weight, of which Montignac is just one version. It works by giving you a focus on certain food types, which ultimately leads you to consume fewer calories.

There is no evidence that 'food combining' has any more effect that just that. However, that doesn't make it a bad thing as most people I deal with are seeking two sources of help - motivation and focus. If this type of dietary approach gives you both, then it can work for you.

What it doesn't do, however, is teach you long-term, healthy dietary habits. There are no peer-reviewed published studies to state whether Montignac is as good as any other dietary programme but that doesn't mean to say it can't help you as an individual. Probably the best dietary approach is the one you'll still be enjoying in a years time.
