Wind problem is ruining my life!

question
I would like to ask about a very embarrassing subject - flatulence. I'm sure a lot of people suffer from it, but don't say.
I avoid fizzy drinks, spicy food, and the obvious things that seem to cause it but no matter how healthily I eat I seem to have wind non-stop.
It is very embarrassing, especially around other people. I have to constantly leave the room, or am a bag of nerves in case I do it in public. I am a very nervous person anyway. Is there something I can take, or foods that relieve it? It really is ruining my life.

answer
What a difficult problem. There is no doubt that certain foods increase flatulence and generally speaking foods that are high in fibre are the main culprits.

Another possible cause is 'aerophagia' which means 'air swallowing'. People who are nervous or who eat quickly often swallow large amounts of air while eating without realising it. Techniques to reduce this would be to consciously eat more slowly, making sure you chew your food thoroughly and never eating 'on the go'.

Always eat in a relaxed, calm environment. Peppermint oil can help reduce the problem, as can an antacid medicine called Kalanticon Gel, both of which can be purchased from your pharmacist. The good news is, it doesn't indicate any serious illness but clearly it can be very distressing. Your GP might be able to offer further advice.
