Pump it up
I'm trying desperately to lose weight and tone my body - particularly my arms, thighs and bum. I recently joined a gym which I attend at least three times a week, and I use the weights for exercising each of these 'problem' areas. However, I'm not sure how many repetitions to do, nor for how long I should be doing them. Can you help?
Classes start with a five-minute warm-up and then different body parts, including the legs, bottom, chest, back, arms, shoulders and abdominals are worked for five minutes at a time. The class ends with various all-important stretches, and it normally runs for 45-60 minutes. BodyPump is the 'original' name of this type of workout, but some health clubs also offer similar programmes under different names. So, if your gym doesn't offer this specific class, there is bound to be something comparable at your local leisure centre.
If you feel daunted by a class in the studio and prefer lifting weights in the gym, then speak to a qualified instructor or personal trainer for advice on the size of weights and repetitions you should be doing. The programme he or she gives you will be determined by your current fitness level, age, body shape, weight and your goals. Good luck.
