Is my yoga video safe?

by Angie Newson

question
I recently bought a 'power yoga' video as I'm having problems with a trapped nerve in my back and have found stretching exercises to be helpful. I'm very fit and supple generally, but am a little annoyed by some of the exercises in the video - specifically the one where you are told to bend over with straight legs from the waist, albeit very slowly. Am I just being picky, or is it wrong to do this? I've always been told that bending from the waist with straight legs is a no-no, and now I'm a little confused.

answer
If the yoga instructor doesn't offer any alternatives or modifications when telling you to bend over with straight legs, chuck out the video. The proper way to perform this exercise in yoga is as follows: bend over slowly, keeping your legs straight but not locking your knees. Your abdominal muscles should be pulled in firmly in order to support your lower back. If you do feel any discomfort at all, bend your knees.

Before buying another video, I suggest you attend a yoga class with a reputable qualified yoga instructor and let him or her know your situation. You can then be given modifications specific to your injury. Many clubs and gyms offer beginner's yoga classes, which tend to provide more basic, introductory instruction. Once you get this down, you can then continue to practise yoga at home with a good video.
