Calorie burning and exercise

by Mark Anthony

question
How many calories would I burn doing each of the following workouts for half an hour: low-impact aerobics, high-impact aerobics, light-moderate weight training and rowing?

answer
The amount of calories you burn varies depending on your age, sex, weight and metabolism, as well as how intensely you perform the exercise. However, generally speaking, 30 minutes of the exercises you listed will burn, on average, the following:

low-impact aerobics: 143 calories
high-impact aerobics: 210 calories
light-moderate weight training: 85 calories
rowing: 200 calories

For every 3,500 calories you eat that you don't burn off, you will gain approximately one pound of fat. Therefore, to lose weight, your calorie intake must be less than your calorie expenditure. The fewer calories you eat and the more you exercise regularly, the more fat you will burn. But while intensive workouts like high-impact aerobics or rowing burn more calories than light weight training, gaining muscle mass is crucial to weight loss. This is because muscle tissue requires more energy to function than fat does, even while at rest. Therefore, the more muscle you have, the more calories you burn - whatever you are doing.
