What is whey protein powder?
I have just embarked on your iVillage Shape Up Challenge, and in the food list I noticed you include whey protein powder as one of the suggested foods. How do you incorporate this into your diet? Is it used as a meal substitute or supplement?
Whey protein powder is one of the purest forms of protein, and it can be found at most health food shops. I suggest you take it as a meal replacement for one of the five or six small meals a day you eat. I always recommend having several mini-meals a day as opposed to three large ones, as eating regularly will keep your metabolism high and help you stay full so you are less likely to snack. To add some flavour to whey protein powder, you can blend it with some fruit and skimmed milk (or even water). It makes a great post-workout meal.
As far as how much you should have, follow the recommendations on the packet. If you have never tried it before, don't take more than 20g per meal. If you overdo it, you could experience some very nasty side effects that wouldn't make you very popular. Yep - I'm talking about wind, so take it easy. I'd also say that you probably don't need more than two portions a day. Good luck.
