Dancing

Dancing is one workout that doesn’t feel like a workout. If you enjoy dancing, there are several varieties to choose from, including ballet and salsa.

the workout
The steps, patterns and music keep your mind busy while you work your heart, burn calories and tone your muscles. And you don’t even have to wear workout clothes.

upside
Dancing allows you to explore different cultures and rhythms including swing, belly dancing and disco. It also builds balance and coordination and it’s an easy way to meet people.

downside
You can get tangled up in the footwork or feel overwhelmed if you’re not a natural or you try too much too soon.

the pros say

  • Classes are widely available.
  • You can usually try a single class before committing to a series of lessons.
  • With some styles of dance like country & western or disco, you can go to a club and try it out without taking lessons first.
  • If you are taking a class that requires a partner, be warned: most classes make you change partners every few minutes.

requirements
Gear: any comfortable clothing, although some styles of dance may require specific shoes. Ask about footwear and clothing requirements if you plan to take lessons.
Instruction/Facilities: classes are offered at community centres, ethnic societies, colleges, adult education programmes, dance schools and fitness centres. Private lessons are also available.
Time: typically 60-90 minutes.
