Rollerblading

Rumour has it that rollerblading was born out of the frustrated passions of a hockey player who needed to stay in shape during the summer months. Thanks to him, you can enjoy this fast-paced pastime year-round.

the workout
Rollerblades look like ice skates, only they have wheels instead of blades. Unlike traditional roller skates, the wheels are arranged in a long row that runs the length of the skate. This makes for a faster skate and better control.

upside
You’ll burn calories, tone you inner and outer thighs and improve your coordination.

downside
Although studies show that rollerblading, also known as inline skating, only has half the impact on joints as running, the risk of injury is still high. Most people get hurt by falling while not wearing the correct protective gear or crashing into other runners, walkers or cyclists.

the pros say

  • The initial costs: skates, £25-£250; helmet, £25 to £60; wrist protection, £8 to £15; elbow protection, £12 to £15; knee protection, £10 to £30. Most suppliers offer deals on wrist, elbow and knee protection sets for around £20.
  • Seek a qualified instructor to help you get started and to teach you the basics like stopping, skating up and down hills, and turning.
  • Use etiquette when sharing the road with other exercisers. Obey all traffic laws and don’t skate out of control or in areas that are beyond your ability.
