The holistic classes that enjoyed a resurgence in the past few years have been sidelined by the arrival of several new, exciting, high impact workouts. From hypoxic running chambers that simulate a high altitude, to actual boxing rings at The Third Space, gyms are now offering the latest in maximum intensity workouts.
The holistic phase hasnt ended, but people now want hardcore training and gyms are providing classes that meet those demands, says Nick Smith, Group Health & Fitness Manager at David Lloyd Leisures head office in London.
What is hardcore training?
Smith describes these workouts as requiring maximum input to the point of physical exhaustion. People are pushed to the limit, both mentally and physically.
Is hardcore training for me?
The key to finding the right exercise is balancing your level of fitness with what you want to achieve, explains Sara Kirkham, Health & Fitness Expert at David Lloyd Leisure in London. Ask yourself if you want to step up your cardiovascular health, or if you are looking for a method of gentle toning. If its the latter, low impact and mind/body classes like yoga and Pilates are your best bet, so dont opt for a high intensity workout simply because these classes are dominating your gyms timetable.
What are the pros and cons of hardcore training?
Benefits: Hardcore training improves your cardiovascular fitness and strength, tones your entire body, burns a maximum number of calories and helps to release endorphins giving you an overall sense of well-being. You should feel a sense of achievement from challenging yourself in one of these high impact classes. This kind of exercise also helps relieve stress by allowing you to release pent up aggression and frustration. If youre already fit, tired of the your current cardiovascular routine and find low impact workouts dull, these classes may be the perfect way to kick start your interest in exercise.
