Why play football?
Ever wondered why David Beckham looks so radiant? Kicking a ball around for 90 minutes can do wonders for your health. FA's exercise scientist, Dawn Scott, gives us six reasons why you should play the beautiful game
- Great cardiovascular exercise. To get fit you need to do 30 minutes exercise three times a week. In order to have real impact this exercise must make your heart beat faster. A quick game of football will get you running and your blood pounding.
- Effective weight-loss, as long as you eat a healthy diet. During a match, you can burn between 1000-2000 calories, as you cover between 8-12km, depending on position and level of competition.
Similarly, during training sessions, you would burn at least 400 calories - this increases with the intensity and duration of training.
- Maintains healthy bones, muscles, tendons and ligaments. You'll be less susceptible to injury, develop the strength and stamina to sustain intense training and be able play more often.
- Healthier heart and blood circulation. A stronger heart delivers oxygen and nutrients to the muscles more efficiently, and helps your body to remove waste products more effectively.
- Stronger and more efficient lungs. You can supply oxygen to the muscles more easily and accomplish more demanding training.
- Psychological well-being. Exercise can improve your mood, decrease anxiety and stress levels. It can also boost your confidence and motivation. Some research has also found that it helps alleviate pain and mood swings experienced during pre-menstrual tension.
