Do gyms discriminate against fat people?

by Angie Newson

question
When is the fitness industry going to wake up and encourage those who really need to lose weight to join the gym? I am very overweight, but am too embarrassed to try a gym. I don't want to be the only fatty in amongst size 8 skinny bimbos strutting about in their skimpy leotards. It's not just me - lots of larger women feel the same way. Why don't gyms have special classes or times just for people over a certain size? I would definitely join if I knew there would be other fatties there. Besides, overweight people need more assistance, due to their physical abilities.

answer
Most gyms and health clubs I know certainly do not discriminate against anyone of any size going into a class and always think very carefully about advertising classes for a particular size or age. Of course there are certain medical, health and safety factors to take into account for people who have not exercised before or are larger or have other medical issues (it's not just the larger people who need help, the very thin ones do too!). Therefore, look for a 'back to basics' class or classes at beginner level. Gyms are not just for the skinny few - people of all ages, size and levels of fitness are now members. If you feel a certain gym is full of 'skinny bimbos' then don't join there - you want to feel comfortable and have fun in the gym you join.

You can always start by exercising at home to videos. Lots of people do this - busy housewives, etc. Also, think about working out with a friend. Many people - regardless of their size/fitness level prefer training with a partner. It's fun, it's social and it's easier. GPs also run a 'GP referral scheme' - ask your local surgery about this. These schemes are run in conjunction with the local gym where the staff is trained specifically to help members with various conditions. Also the gym should be decent enough to have gym instructors advising you on a programme and updating it every six weeks. And if there happen to be any bimbos there I can assure you, they are NOT looking at you, they're too busy looking at themselves.
