Metabolism boosters

by Lynn Grieger, R.D., C.D.E.

question
I'm a new mum with a nine-month-old daughter. I was overweight when I became pregnant and lost some weight after delivery, but now I am gaining the pounds again. I try to walk at least two miles each day and have just started weight-training. I want to lose weight and have heard that eating five small meals a day will increase my metabolism. Is this true?

answer
The only way to increase metabolism is by building up muscle mass, which you’re doing through weight training. You won't be able to increase your metabolism dramatically, but even burning an extra 50 calories each day can add up over time.

Some people find that eating five or six small meals a day helps to limit hunger and, therefore, calorie intake. Our bodies store any excess calories as fat, so it makes sense not to overeat.

Most of us want to lose weight quickly, but in reality most people lose weight slowly, shedding approximately one or two pounds each month. Instead of expecting rapid weight loss, focus on small goals that are behaviour-related, such as increasing the number of miles you walk and the amount of fruit you eat each day, but decreasing the number of times you eat for emotional reasons instead of hunger. If you make gradual changes like these, the weight will come off in time. Just be patient!
