When is the best time to eat?

by Dr Wynnie Chan

question
I am 45 years old and have gradually put more weight on over the past five years. I don't eat anything after my evening meal at 6.30pm until 12.30pm the next day when I have my lunch. Sometimes I may have a banana at 10.30am. I am now wondering whether my body thinks it is being 'starved' and is storing fat because of this.

answer
Many experts believe that to keep our systems functioning more efficiently we should eat small meals frequently, rather than large meals at irregular intervals. This is because the latter is believed to cause large ups and downs in our blood sugar levels, as opposed to a constant, steady supply.

As you suspect, if you miss breakfast and don't eat anything until lunchtime, your body will be in starvation mode as the readily available energy source has been used up. You'll have to burn protein (muscle) instead, which is not the ideal fuel for your brain to function on. Try eating as soon as you're able to after getting up in the morning and concentrate on starchy carbohydrate foods like bread and breakfast cereals, which will fill you up and make you less likely to crave high-fat and high-sugar snacks during mid-morning.
