Vitamins and your child: how much is too much?

by Ms. Alyson Greenhalgh and Dr. Sara Kirk

question
What vitamins should I be giving my two-year-old?

answer
Specialists recommend that children take daily vitamin drops between the ages of six months and two years, and up to five years. The recommended daily dose of 5 drops provides 200 milligrams of Vitamin A, 20 milligrams of Vitamin C and 7 milligrams of Vitamin D. Children’s vitamin drops are inexpensive and may be purchased from baby clinics and pharmacies.

Alternatively, childrens’ vitamin and mineral supplements may be found in supermarkets and pharmacies. Iron-deficiency anaemia is common in children, and so meat or meat products, fortified breakfast cereals and dark leafy vegetables should be encouraged in addition to vitamins.
