Do fish oils help arthritis?

by Ms. Alyson Greenhalgh and Dr. Sara Kirk

question
Do fish oils really help arthritis or is this a myth?

answer
Fish oils such as cod and halibut liver oils have long been associated with easing arthritis pain and are often lauded for 'oiling the joints.' While this is not exactly accurate, fish oils do offer relief for some people with arthritis, although research has found that the amount of fish oils necessary for this effect would be quite high. If you suffer from arthritis, you might want to consider increasing your intake of oily fish such as mackerel, sardines or tuna, or take a fish oil supplement.
