What are functional foods and are they important for health?

Functional foods are a new craze raiding our supermarket shelves. These foods have been enhanced with additional nutrients or healthy components like fibre. Examples include soft drinks and cereal bars with added vitamins, margarine designed to lower cholesterol, and yogurt with probiotic bacteria (the helpful kind that makes it more difficult for bad bacteria to invade your system). Functional foods are aimed at people who tend to eat on the run and don’t feel like they get enough essential nutrients in their regular diet. Current research is underway to investigate how effective these products really are.
