What is co-enzyme Q10?

by Ms. Alyson Greenhalgh and Dr. Sara Kirk

question
I've heard a lot about co-enzyme Q10, but what effect does it have on my health?

answer
This enzyme is produced in the body and helps in the production of energy. Co-enzyme Q10 also acts as an antioxidant, and is believed by some to help slow the ageing process and possibly stop the spread of cancer. Recent research even suggests that this enzyme may hold promise as a treatment for congestive heart failure, and some dentists advocate co-enzyme Q10 as a treatment for gum disease.

The ability to produce Q10 declines with age, but you can find it in many food sources including meat products and seafood, cereals, green leafy vegetables, fruit and dairy products.
