The herb most well-known for its sleep-inducing properties is valerian root, which is often found in over-the-counter sleep aids such as Nytol Herbal. This herb should not be taken when you are pregnant or breast-feeding, nor should it be taken for longer than 2 to 3 weeks. Possible adverse reactions include headaches, muscle spasms and heart palpitations.

Another option is having a cup of calming chamomile tea before going to bed. If you continue to suffer from severe insomnia, see your doctor who may refer you to a specialist.
