Diets A-Z: Perricone Diet

The theory
Not so much a weight loss plan (that is a side benefit) as a plan to make you look younger and live longer. It is designed by a dermatologist, who also actively promotes his brand of supplements and skin lotions as adjuncts to the diet. His big-bug-bear and the cause of all health problems, is inflammation. When it is allowed to get out of control it leads to ill health on many levels. The diet is aimed at controlling inflammation and restoring youthfulness.

The plan
It is basically a healthy eating plan without too many pitfalls. You are encouraged to eat lots of vegetables and fruits, lots and lots of oily fish, lean organic poultry, whole grains, beans, nuts, green tea and drink lots of water. Many foods are banned including all the usual suspects like processed foods, and alcohol. Foods like red meat, pasta bread, many vegetables (carrots, peas, corn) and fruit (tropical fruit, raisins), and rice are also excluded. High Glycemic Index (GI) foods and red meat encourage inflammation.

The pros

  • Some of the research quoted is sound, such as that on inflammation and omega-3 fatty acids, but a lot of it is very borderline, such as the extensive blame placed on high-GI foods.
  • Good intakes of antioxidants (but a shame to cut out some of the most delicious fruit without a really good reason).

The cons

  • You have to like fish, but if you don't you are advised to cut it into squares and swallow it like a pill. Vegetarians are allowed to substitute flax oil.
  • The diet is unequivocal: A breakfast of orange juice, cereal with skimmed milk and banana causes rapid acceleration of the ageing process and will leave you fat, wrinkled and tired!

Duration
Indefinite

Checklist
Restaurants: Yes, with planning
Alcohol: No
Caffeine: No
Need to buy special foods:Yes
Ok for vegetarians: Fishitarians will fare better

The pros say
The diet is rigid which will make it hard for some to follow. It won't do you any harm and it will probably do you some good - but you don't need to spend a fortune on supplements - 25 are recommended!
