I've gained weight with my new workout

by Angie Newson

question
I started a fitness programme a few months ago which involves a 40-minute workout three times a week. Prior to that I did very little exercise. Since I have begun exercising I have also tried to change my diet by cutting down on carbohydrates. I'm a relatively healthy eater - my only problem is too much pasta. Unfortunately, since I have begun these two courses of action I have put on weight. Why on earth has this happened? I seem to be better off when I am not exercising.

answer
My personal opinion is chuck out the scales. You are losing body fat and increasing muscle mass and muscle weighs more than fat - so that'll explain the weight gain. Go by how you're actually feeling and looking and how your clothes are fitting. With regards to the pasta, try not eating pasta after 5pm and see what happens. Pasta is great at lunchtime and will certainly fuel you to go through to the evening. For dinner, just eat grilled chicken or fish, with green vegetables and salad.
