Diary of a dieter - week 3

by Rachel Roberts
RachelWill Rachel, our fearless dieter, claw back the damage of last week's 1lb gain or will the evils of alcohol stand in her way?

After last week's disappointing 1lb gain, the first couple of days this week have been a bit of a psychological struggle. I've been severely tempted to abandon the diet altogether, but a chat with a fellow dieter in the office has put me back on track. I also like going to online message boards to see what other dieters have to say. It makes me feel as though I'm not on my own and, after I hear what other people are going through, I feel recharged and enthusiastic.

My newfound positive attitude has come just in time. I have a work dinner planned this week and it is going to be a big test. I know what I'm like in these situations - watching what I eat isn't so tricky; it's the alcohol that's my downfall.

I start really well, virtuously ordering a plain green salad followed by homemade fishcakes with a side order of new potatoes. At 8pm I have two points left - just enough for a couple of glasses of white wine to round off my meal.

Fast forward to 3:00am and I'm drinking a disgusting-tasting cocktail with the hardcore office boozers. I blame our naughty waitress for my predicament. She kept refilling my glass. Although I noticed it the first couple of times, the effects of the booze soon kicked in and the evening disappeared in a heady, drunken blur.

Still, I'm sure I have managed to recoup some of those extra points - the following morning -because I feel so hungover and sick the only thing I can eat until the afternoon is a small banana. I have to write something about yesterday's performance on my tracker sheet (the weekly record of everything I've eaten). Let me see… eight(ish), large(ish) glasses of white wine and a couple of cocktails, or was that three? Or, four? I think it's safe to say I blew my points yesterday.

I've decided not to worry too much about my first fall from grace. I had a great night out, and there's no point in beating myself up about it. What's done is done and you have to let your hair down sometimes, don't you? I think the fact that people have started to notice that I'm losing weight has helped me feel less anxious. A couple of people in the office asked if I was getting slimmer. At first I felt embarrassed, but then I thanked them for the compliment. Dieting is hard work and I'm going to take any support I can.

And so to the weekly moment of truth. When Liz - the leader of my slimming class - first told me how much weight I had lost I asked her to repeat it. But I heard right: 6lbs. Hooray! I feel amazing. That's nearly half a stone, and 9½lbs in total. I'm so happy that I stuck with it after last week's disheartening result. Let's hope my success continues.

Original start weight: 13st 7lbs
End week one weight: 13st 2½lbs
End week two weight: 13st 3½lbs
End week three weight: 12st 11½lb
