Diets A-Z: Low-carb bars tried and tested
A panel of five testers try a selection of ten low-carb bars
1. Biochem Strive - Crunchy Chocolate Smore Bar - £2.69
Calories - 200kcal
Fat - 9g
Net carbs - 3g
This has a woody texture like a chewed-up kitchen sideboard. It is very dry, like gravel, with a medicinal aftertaste. It's more like eating MDF or chipboard than a chocolate bar. Boring.
1/10
2. Kit Kat Low Carb - £0.89
Calories - 92kcal
Fat - 6.6g
Net carbs - 4g
This tastes like cheap ice cream wafers coated with a bitter chocolate. There is an earthy aftertaste and it leaves a smooth and slimy residue in the mouth. It's nothing like the original Kit Kat and it doesn't fill the hunger gap.
3/10
3. Rolo Low Carb - £1.59
Calories - 200kcal
Fat - 15.2g
Net carbs - 3.5g
The chocolate is really good - not as sickly as original Rolos. They start off tasting like a normal Rolo but there is a coconut aftertaste. The chocolate is not as rich and it disappears from your mouth pretty quickly leaving a musty film on the teeth.
8/10
4. Carb Wise - Crispy Yoghurt Lemon - £1.69
Calories - 240kcal
Fat - 9g
Net carbs - 4g
This smells a bit like toilet cleaner - awful. A soggy cereal bar that tastes synthetic, not like lemon. The dreadful taste hangs in the mouth and doesn't go away.
0/10
5. Carb Minders - Gold Nutty Caramel Burst - £1.59
Calories - 190kcal
Fat - 7g
Net carbs - 3g
The taste is tolerable, a bit sweeter than the other bars and the chocolate and caramel are quite nice, a bit like a Snickers bar. But it does not have a good consistency and tastes a bit smokey.
6/10
6. Carb Minders - Crispy Chocolate Peanut - £1.69
Calories - 240kcal
Fat - 10g
Net carbs - 3g
Not too bad. The peanuts taste natural but it is a bit dusty and dry, with a frothy and slightly slimy aftertaste. The chocolate tasted good but it could not be classed as a 'treat'.
