The Atkins and similar diets

by Allan Spreen, M.D.

question
What is your opinion of the Robert Atkins Revolution Diet, or any low-carbohydrate diet for that matter?

answer
No diet is right for everyone, but I have a lot of respect for the Atkins diet. I have seen amazing weight loss from this plan, which at first I thought was nuts.

I have become more convinced that a huge majority of us have problems with over-consumption of carbohydrates, made even worse by the fact that most of our sugars and starches (carbohydrates) are highly refined. This means they have been processed and stripped of invaluable fibre and other nutrients required to assimilate carbohydrates efficiently in our bodies.

Robert Atkins M.D. bypasses this carbohydrate problem in the early phases of his diet by eliminating them all together. Then he adds back small amounts of unrefined carbohydrates. The idea is to keep people in a state of ‘ketosis’ so that their bodies preferentially burn fat over carbs.

Some people get constipated in the early stages of the plan and need added fibre supplements. Others just don't like eating so much protein and fat because they’ve been hearing about low-fat diets for ages.

In any case, high-protein diets like this one are worth learning about, whether you use them or not.
