A cure for overeating and indulgence

question
What's the best way to enjoy a celebratory meal without jeopardising your diet and fitness goals? And what happens if you do 'overdo' it?

answer
iVillage members' recommendations:

Get back on track straightaway

  • The day after a blowout, get back to your usual diet and drink more water than usual. Eat fewer carbohydrates, especially if you indulged in a lot of breads and pastas.
  • Drink plenty of water and eat lightly for the next two to three days, concentrating on fruits and vegetables. Get out and do some aerobic exercise.
  • Pick yourself up, dust yourself off and get going. Feeling sorry for yourself won’t get you anywhere. If you go to a gym, look at the people around you for inspiration.

    Indulge and enjoy

  • Splurge, splurge, splurge. If you are like me, you work hard 95 per cent of the time - exercising, eating in moderation, etc. Enjoy Christmas by relaxing and being with friends or family and eat without worrying.
  • I feel that going off your diet for one day is a good thing. Go back to your usual eating plan the next day. Everyone deserves one day of guilt-free eating.
  • One day of unhealthy eating is not going to ruin your figure.
  • Enjoy yourself for one day. You could be gone the next day. We all deserve it.
  • I look forward to sharing a holiday with my family and I don't worry about overeating. The holidays are a time to enjoy and relax and I get back to my normal eating and exercising habits after I get home.
  • Everyone needs to relax a bit, so eat, drink and be merry. If you start to feel uncomfortable, stop. It is not healthy to worry so much about whether or not to enjoy Christmas because you’re eating more than usual.

    Don't feel guilty

  • I try to get back to my usual routine ASAP and I tell the 'little voice' that berates me for overeating to shut up.

    Listen to your body
  • When I spend a few minutes deep breathing and stretching (at least 30 seconds per position, 5 or 6 different stretches), I am less likely to overeat because I am more aware of what my body needs and I know it doesn't need huge portions.
  • It was a long road before I realised that a long-term, sensible eating plan with a little exercise thrown in means that your body will tell you what it wants and when it wants it. Why should Christmas be any different? I will eat until I'm satisfied and then stop. Who wants to be either starving or suffering from an overfull tummy anyway?
  • There's nothing wrong with having a little extra turkey or pudding, but don't go crazy and make yourself sick.
