Teenage dieting

by Dr Wynnie Chan

question
I'm 15, about 5ft 5ins tall, and I weigh about 136 pounds. My stomach bulges a bit too much. I want to start dieting, but I've heard that dieting can stunt growth (upwards as well as outwards). Is that true? If it is, is there any way I can lose weight and still grow taller?

answer
Following very strict dietary regimes can stunt growth, but there are other types of more realistic diet plans that you can follow that will be healthier for you in the long term. During adolescence, growth is very rapid and energy and nutrients are needed to support this period of growth spurt, so it's advisable not to start dieting yet. Just remember to eat sensibly.

Try to avoid snack foods that are high in fat and sugar, e.g. crisps, chocolate, carbonated drinks and biscuits. Instead, base your meals on the four main foods groups, which are:

1. Bread, other cereals and potatoes. This group includes pasta, rice and breakfast cereals and should form the basis of most meals. Don't overload them with fatty toppings, though.
2. Fruit and vegetables. Aim to include five portions a day.
3. Meat, fish and alternatives. This group includes pulses, beans, eggs and tofu. Aim to choose low-fat versions wherever you can. Grilling or steaming helps to keep the fat content down.
4. Milk and dairy products. This group includes cheese, yoghurt and fromage frais. Again, aim to choose low-fat versions wherever you can.
