Be good to yourself with Tetley green tea

Snacking and cravings

by Dr Wynnie Chan

question
I am currently studying for my GCSEs and have hardly any time to exercise as I have so much work to do. I try to eat healthily, but I always find I need an energy boost and end up eating a chocolate bar. Do you have any suggestions?

answer
It's difficult to eat healthily and exercise when you're studying for exams. While it's easy to eat numerous mini snacks like crisps, chocolate, biscuits, chips, etc, it's important to remember firstly that these are calorie dense and also that it's difficult to fulfil all your nutrient, vitamin and mineral requirements if you base your diet on these everyday.

Breakfast is a great way to get your glucose levels up and help you concentrate throughout the morning, so filling up on a big bowl of wholegrain cereals such as Weetabix, muesli or porridge would help. Having some leftovers from last night's dinner perhaps would help refuel you at lunch, or making a simple sandwich, e.g. peanut butter and banana (if you're not allergic to peanuts, that is) or low-fat cream cheese with canned pineapple.

A dinner of pasta or baked potatoes with tuna and sweetcorn would ensure that you meet your energy and nutrient requirements each day. Remember to include fruits in your diet, such as raisins, apricots or whatever fruit you like, in order to help boost your antioxidant intake. After all, it's important to stay healthy when you're revising.
