Too studious to get sweaty

by Angie Newson

question
I'm a 17-year old girl and need help. I'm 5ft 9ins and currently weigh just over 15 stone. The problem is that I'm studying for my AS-levels so I have no time after school to exercise and my weekends are taken over with homework. Can you help me at all? I need to lose this weight because I'm worried about my future health and I have a big celebration in May and want to be slim by that time. Please give me some advice.

answer
I feel that's excuses, excuses. I have a 17-year old daughter myself who is studying for AS-levels. I certainly appreciate how much work is involved. But you do have free periods. Find something you enjoy - that's the answer and then you've got more chance of sticking with it. Grab a friend and go to hip hop or street dance classes. Work out to motivating music. WALK to your friends' houses - put on your trainers and walk with purpose. Get off the bus a stop earlier and walk the rest of the way. Buy or borrow an exercise video. I know some girls who rave about Tracey Shaw's Salsacise video. Or even actually try salsa. Lots of places are offering this fun class - and it's a great way to meet new people.

When going around the shops, wear trainers instead of high shoes - window-shopping is still exercise. Only allow yourself a lie-in on Sunday, so Saturday morning could be your workout time. Review your diet - make sure you cut out all the junk, fizzy drinks and sweets, drink lots of water to improve your skin and hair. You can do it, and before you know if, by the time May comes, you'll look fantastic.
