Our straight talking Lancashire lass takes a sideways look at the daily news.
Does Imogen Thomas deserve our sympathy?
When glamour models/reality TV stars/prostitutes engage in sordid affairs with Premier League footballers, most people generally pay no attention. This is because UK footballers are a notorious bunch of womanizing jerks drawn to desperate WAG wannabes who will gleefully spread their legs for 15 short minutes of fame.
This week saw an exception to the rule. Former FHM model and Big Brother contestant Imogen Thomas cropped up out of nowhere, weeping on the couch of This Morning and telling all and sundry of an affair with a man who, like Harry Potter’s Voldemort we could never name. And the secretive nature of the story pricked our ears.
Inevitably Ryan Giggs was ousted on Twitter and then named in Parliament.
Giggs the family man, the one beacon of light in the sleazy world of Premier League football. And as it turns out he was as slimy as the rest of them.
Of course all this is old news. The thing that annoys me is how Saint Imogen is wandering the halls of Fleet Street playing ‘poor little victim’. She was horribly accused of cashing in and selling her story! She was allegedly engaging in a bit of nasty blackmail! It was oh so unfair how she was fed to the media lions whilst Giggsy enjoyed anonymity! Oh how my heart bleeds.
Imogen the Pure is painting a picture of a genuine love affair twixt wannabe WAG and handsome footballer, rather than what it really was – a run of seedy hotel encounters before football matches between two people who’s brains live in their naughty bits.
“I called it off a million times but he kept coming back’” she says in the Daily Mail. “He knew it was wrong as well, he said as much, but he was pursuing me.” She even says she believed he would leave his family so they could get married, such was the ferocity of his love for her.
Pull the other one! She knew exactly what she was doing. It was no Mills & Boon love story, she was shagging a married man, for six months. A married man who was out for what he could get, and he figured he had the money to get away with it.
Sure, it takes two to tango, and his over-reaction to the gagging-order-gone-wrong (trying to sue people on Twitter for mentioning his name) made him look like a prize arsehole. But there is no way that Imogen Thomas can claim the moral high ground here. Like Giggs, she is nothing more than a cheap home wrecker.
The one person who can claim the moral high ground is the wronged wife Stacey Giggs, who has kept a dignified silence about the entire affair. Well, we say ‘dignified silence’ but who’s to say she hasn’t been subject to a secretive superinjunction too?
So does Imogen deserve our sympathy? No, not one jot. Imogen and Ryan deserve everything they get. It’s the wife and kids I feel sorry for.
